Two Careers in One Relationship
It is common today to find couples made up of two career-oriented
people. Due to the amount of time each of them has to dedicate
to their professional goals, there is a very real risk that
their relationship will suffer.
But what can you do if you find yourself in
a relationship and both of you have careers to follow? Is
there anything you can do to prevent a disastrous break-up
or to avoid competing with your partner's career?
Unfortunately, there are people who are so involved with their
career that they become absolutely rigid and inflexible when
it comes to a love relationship. This type of person has all
the attributes necessary to succeed at work; they are competitive
and have the leadership qualities that make them successful.
They find work exciting and it's easy for them to reach their
professional goals. But, because they don't have to compromise
at work, they are often unable to negotiate things in a relationship.
To make a relationship work between two professionals they
must respect each other, the other's career goals and share
the responsibilities.
If you are in a relationship with another professionally oriented
person, try to understand that the job that person has is
more than a 9 to 5 commitment. It often involves working extra
hours, bringing work related materials home to read, traveling
and participation in all sorts of events.
The greatest problem you have to confront is lack of time.
Try to make every moment spent together memorable. Another
key element is teamwork. All the responsibilities of the household
need to be shared.
Here are a few tips that might make it easier:
Organize and schedule the tasks that need to
be done.
Be sure to plan a night out on a regular basis.
It will help you remember that life is more than just work
and household responsibilities.
Remember to schedule time just for yourself.
If you find you can't keep up with everything;
taking care of the children, cooking, yard work, house work,
etc - hire someone to take some of the burden off you and
your partner.
Communicate with your partner. Share your concerns
and find a solution together.
Find a way to relieve stress. Go to the gym, jog in the park,
ride bicycles together. Whatever you enjoy.
Remember these few simple tips and you're sure
to make it work. Remember that your careers should be a source
of pride. Support each other and your relationship will grow
and strengthen.
